Laba Festival 臘八節(jié)
There is an old saying: Don't make your mouth water children, because the Laba Festival and the Spring Festival are just around the corner. Laba is celebrated on the eighth day of the last lunar month, referring to the traditional start of celebrations for the Chinese New Year. "La" in Chinese means the 12th lunar month, and "ba" means eight.俗話說:“小孩小孩你別饞,過了臘八就是年。”臘八節(jié)是農(nóng)歷12月初八,這一天象征著慶祝中國傳統(tǒng)新春佳節(jié)的開始。“臘”代表一年中農(nóng)歷最后一個月,而“八”代表第八天。
臘八粥 The Laba porridge 臘八粥,表達為“laba porridge”;“la”即“臘”,農(nóng)歷12月就是“臘月”,即“12th lunar month”。臘八就是臘月初八,這天要喝的臘八粥也稱八寶粥,即“babao porridge(eight treasures)”。

Little new year 小年
As the legend goes, there is a kitchen god in each house who is responsible for the kitchen and oversees the conduct of the family. On this day, the kitchen god returns to Heaven to report the conducts of the family to the Emperor of Heaven. Therefore, worshipping the kitchen god aims to “please him.” People put out some sweet and sticky foods, such as rice dumplings and malted sugar. In this way, the lips of the kitchen god will stuck together, and he cannot report any wrong doings of the family. Thus the family can lead an auspicious life.民俗傳說中,每家都有一位灶神掌管飲食,也記錄一家人的言行。今天,灶神就要返回天庭匯報這一戶人一年的大小事,所以祭灶的主題就是“拉攏灶神”。在廚房內(nèi)擺放些甜而粘牙的如湯圓、麥芽糖等食物,灶神的嘴被粘住,就少匯報些壞事,才能天降吉祥。

Chinese New Year, or generally referred to as Lunar New Year, globally is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar.中國新年,或者稱為春節(jié),是中國的傳統(tǒng)農(nóng)歷上慶祝一年開始的節(jié)日。
Lantern Festival 元宵節(jié)
Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. The Lantern Festival is also called " xiao nian" in some parts of China. The first month is a lunar January, the ancients called “night”as "xiao, " so the fifteenth day of the first month for the Lantern Festival. And it is the first full moon night of a year on the 15th, Symbolizing "reunion". It is also the night when spring returns to the earth. People celebrate the Lantern Festival, which is also a continuation of "celebrating the New Year".The customs of the Lantern Festival vary from place to place throughout the country. Among them, eating yuanxiao, enjoying lanterns, watching dance with dragons and lions are several important folk customs of the festival.元宵節(jié)是中國的傳統(tǒng)節(jié)日。元宵節(jié)是在農(nóng)歷正月十五。正月是農(nóng)歷的元月,古人稱“夜”為“宵”,所以稱正月十五為元宵節(jié)。正月十五日是一年中第一個月圓之夜,象征著“團圓”,也是大地回春的夜晚。人們慶祝元宵節(jié),也是“慶賀新春”的延續(xù)。元宵節(jié)的習俗在全國各地也不盡相同,其中吃元宵、賞花燈、舞龍、舞獅子等是元宵節(jié)幾項重要民間習俗。
Eating yuanxiao( or tangyuan)——吃元宵(又稱湯圓)
Yuanxiao is called "tangyuan" in the south. These names are similar to the pronunciation of "tuanyuan", meaning reunion, symbolizing the reunion and happiness of the whole family. Eating yuanxiao symbolizes family reunion like a full moon and represents people's wishes for a better life in the future.元宵在南方稱"湯圓"。這些名稱都與“團圓”字音相近,取團圓之意,象征全家人團團圓圓,和睦幸福。吃元宵象征家庭像圓月一樣團圓,寄托了人們對未來生活的美好愿望。
