國際護士節(jié)的英語是International Nurses Day。今天就和英大一起來學一學nurse這個單詞吧。

nurse作為“護士”，它的定義是：

a person trained to care for people who are ill or not able to care for themselves because of injury or old age, and who may also help doctors in treating people.

被培訓來照顧生病的或因受傷、年老而不能照顧自己的人，也可以是幫助醫(yī)生治療的人。

除了“護士”，你還知道nurse的其他意思嗎？

前綴nur-表示“養(yǎng)育”，作為名詞的nurse還表示“奶媽”、“保姆”、“保護樹”（一種植物）。

作為動詞時，nurse則引申為“護理”、“照顧”。

明白了nurse的本義，我們就能明白下面幾個詞的由來了：

nursery /?n??s?ri/

If you nurture something such as a young child or a young plant, you care for it while it is growing and developing. 養(yǎng)育

If you nurture plans, ideas, or people, you encourage them or help them to develop. 培養(yǎng) 

nourish /n?r??/

To nourish a person, animal, or plant means to provide them with the food that is necessary for life, growth, and good health. 為…提供營養(yǎng)nurse加-ing變動名詞形容room，但它可不是護士間哦，而是“哺乳室”、“育嬰室”。

More and more nursing rooms have been built.

越來越多的哺乳室建成了。nursing home表示“療養(yǎng)院”、“小型私人醫(yī)院”、“養(yǎng)老院”。

 

He died in a nursing home at the age of 87.

他在一家養(yǎng)老院去世，享年87歲。

03 | nursery rhyme

nursery是由nurse變形來的，表示“幼兒教育的”、“托兒所”，而rhyme有“押韻”、“詩”之意，所以nursery rhyme表示“童謠”。

 

She lapsed into a little girl voice to deliver a nursery rhyme.

她改用童聲唱起了童謠。

 

04 | nurse a grievance

nurse作為動詞，也有“懷抱”的意思，引申出來表示“心懷”，而grievance則是“苦衷”、“牢騷”，所以連起來就是“心懷不滿”。

 

nurse還可以搭配through，nurse through表示“在……期間照顧”，“幫助……克服”。

 

Consider this thought when next you feel tempted to nurse a grievance: that life is too short to be little! 

下次你心生怨言時，想想這一點：“人生苦短休斤斤！”
